Did you know that paper is one of China’s four great inventions? Discover the ancient art of Chinese papermaking in a hands-on workshop in the Chinese Garden at Montréal’s Jardin botanique, and immerse yourself in this time-honoured craft.

In this guided activity, you’ll learn the key techniques of traditional papermaking using bamboo fibres—a natural, supple and elegant material. The fibres are soaked in tea-infused water, and aloe juice (or okra) is used as a plant-based adhesive. The resulting bamboo paper has a delicate tea scent.

Then it’s time to get creative: personalize your sheet of Chinese paper by adding natural elements such as flower petals and leaves.

A symbol of resilience and harmony in Chinese culture, bamboo becomes a unique medium for expression, blending nature and craftsmanship. Take part in this cultural activity and explore a tradition that is still very much alive.
